Description:

Nautilus was one of three (at least I think it's three) deep-cover spies in the Transformers universe! Other deep-cover spies are alluded to or mentioned, but only three were named.

Nautilus served two purposes in his tiny appearance. First of all he was the standard 'revise what happened before' source. He basically summarised the events of issue #113 in a neat little package when reporting to Rodimus Prime. But more than that he was used to bring the Autobots into the conflict. Without Nautilus' input the story which follows (Rodimus, Kup, Blurr + Wreck Gar going to Earth. Bumblebee being rebuilt as Goldbug, etc.) couldn't have happened.

Again, Nautilus appeals because he's something you rarely see in TFs. He's not your standard warrior, but an effective and skilled deep-cover agent. It would be hard to do this with the regular TFs, so, of course, it falls to the good old obscures.

HAHA! Eat full-body-shot-of-Nautilus-from-behind, Commie scum!Biography:

In the year 2007 Nautilus was a deep-cover agent for the Autobots. He had infiltrated the Decepticon ranks and appeared to be a consummate professional. He carried out missions as was expected of him and seemed to be able to talk to other Decepticons as an equal. No mean feat considering the poor example from Warmonger, the only other known Autobot infiltrator.

It's uncertain how long Nautilus was under cover for the Autobots. Could have been months, could have been years. However, what IS certain is that he broke cover about a month before he was supposed to.

Nautilus was returning from a routine mission for the Decepticons when he ran into a thoroughly beaten up Cyclonus and Scourge. He quizzed them about who'd been tough enough to whup them and they reluctantly told him about Death's Head.

Apparently Death's Head, keen on the bounty put on Galvatron's head, had beaten them to scrap for information on Galvatron's whereabouts. Cyclonus admitted that they didn't KNOW where Galvatron was, but that he'd guessed that Galvy had travelled back in time again, to the year 1987.

Nautilus, realising how important the location of Galvatron was, broke cover a month early to report this to Rodimus Prime. The news that two maniacs (Death's Head and Galvatron) were about to do war in the recent past (1987) was not good for Rodimus and, based on Nautilus' report, he prepared to travel back to 1987 to bring both Galvatron AND Death's Head back to 2007!!

Tech Specs/TFU:

Probably a high intelligence as he seemed a rather effective agent. Apart from that it's almost impossible to tell.

Someone once told me Nautilus was 'cute'. TF fans are disturbing.Toy:

Despite having a very interesting appearance, Nautilus didn't really have the kind of look that (at least I think) would be very conducive to a toy.

On the plus side he does have a few 'alt mode features', including the wings on the back of his legs. Also, the fact that he was shown with a Decepticon insignia adds to the sense that this is a character who just got off from being a Decepticon. As with Triton, I think the best feature in a Nautilus toy would be some kind of removable allegiance stamp. Still, despite all that, he still doesn't look 'toy friendly' to me.

Try to decide for yourself based on these limited pictures... if you can.

Over All:

Nautilus was a fairly standard deep-cover agent. Well... as standard as you get seeing as there was only three of them (not including, of course, Punch/Counterpunch).

I like him. He achieved his purpose (to bring Rodimus into the action) in a unique way. He also summarised the previous issue without doing it in a contrived way. One always appreciates that. Not a bad character, especially for your standard hi-then-bye obscure.

Issue #114

Head shot! Whew!  Kind of a strange shot of Nautilus from the side.  He definitely looks like he could pass for a Decepticon, with those dark, evil eyes.  This is a shot of Nautilus' head. He is camera hog, isn't he?  He has large shoulders in this picture.  A horselike mane? Yes please!  A crappy Nautilus shot. You don't even know why you're going to click on it. But you are. Sucker.  Can't... see... over... own... chest!
